The co-chairman of Donald Trump’s presidential campaign said Monday that the Republican opposition to his candidacy would “get over it.”
“We have a lot of people who are really upset, there were a lot of hurt feelings over the course of the primary campaign, and a lot people feel like they just can’t support Mr. Trump,” Sam Clovis said on MSNBC. “I think they’ll get over it.”
Clovis said that the plan to overthrow Trump as the party’s nominee would “stop itself because they’re going to figure out the futility of what they’re trying to do.”
Clovis’ comments come in the midst of another last-ditch effort by Republicans to overthrow Trump as the party’s nominee. A group that dubbed itself “Free the Delegates” is fundraising for a staff and a potential legal defense fund to fight against the Trump campaign at the July convention in Cleveland.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) dodged saying Sunday whether he believed Trump was qualified for the presidency. Clovis suggested McConnell’s hesitation was due to McConnell feeling as if he didn’t have any control over Trump’s popularity.
