Google has confirmed to Bloomberg that Gmail, YouTube and Google Videos have been blocked in Iran since February 10, the day before the country began celebrations of the 33rd anniversary of the Islamic Revolution.
The statement from Google confirms the anecdotal reports of users within the country and operators of proxy servers, which have since Thursday also reported service disruptions. The theory of those who are blocked is that the Iranian government is attempting to block the Internet to suppress protests against the regime, following the outbreak of protests around the same time in 2011. The Iranian government’s Information Technology Organization and the Telecommunication Infrastructure Co. has said it is unaware of the issues, Bloomberg reported, citing state news agency Mehr.
