Rep. Jim Moran (D-VA) said in a statement on Thursday that his son Patrick Moran “will come out of this tough situation a better man” after police announced they were investigating the son’s actions in a video released by conservative activist James O’Keefe.

Patrick Moran, 23, resigned as field director of his father’s campaign after a video released by O’Keefe showed him offering advice to an undercover videographer who claimed to want to commit voter fraud. The congressman called his son’s actions a “serious error in judgment that Patrick wishes he could take back.”

“I don’t condone the actions of the right wing organization in question, but I recognize that this incident is teaching Patrick a tough lesson early in life,” Moran said in a statement on Friday. “I know that my son’s intention was to deflect the line of questioning by this trained political operative bent on goading him into a specific response.”
