Quinnipiac: Santorum Leads Pennsylvania Republican Primary, Does Better Against Obama

Former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum leads a new Quinnipiac University poll of Republican primary voters from in the state he used to represent in the Senate with 36 percent of the total vote. Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney is second with 22 percent, Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX) sees 12 and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich is at eight. The PA Primary is April 24th and awards 72 delegates.

“Pennsylvania Republicans are turning to their native son, former Sen. Rick Santorum. The last time we surveyed the Keystone State, during the Gingrich boomlet in December, the former House Speaker led the GOP pack with 31 percent, followed by Gov. Mitt Romney with 17 percent and Santorum with 9 percent,” said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute said in a release.

Santorum also goes better against President Obama in a potential matchup against President Obama in Pennsylvania, coming within one point, 45 – 44. Romney is bested by a 46 – 40 in the state by Obama.
