PKK Kills Eight Turkish Soldiers

The PKK, an organization fighting for Kurdish autonomy in southeastern Turkey, killed eight Turkish soldiers and wounded 16 more in a series of gunbattles on Tuesday. The rebels launched the attacks, one of the deadliest in years, from a base in northern Iraq. Ten rebels died in the fighting.

Approximately 20 percent of Turkey’s 75 million residents are Turkish, and secessionist fighting has claimed tens of thousands of deaths since fighting initially began in 1984.
