The likelihood of an assault weapons ban passing Congress has long been considered dim, something that House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) admitted in an interview with the Denver Post published Monday.
Pelosi said that strengthened background checks represent a more attainable policy than a ban on assault weapons, the proposal that’s being led by her fellow northern California dweller, Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA).
“Where we can make the most difference is with background checks and information shared,” Pelosi said. “Let’s keep guns out of the wrong hands. There’s more of a rally around background checks … and some (Democratic) unity around mental-health issues.”
The former House Speaker added that tighter background checks and bans on high-capacity magazines “would go a long way to protect the American people.”
