One Month Later, Manchin Remains ‘Very Hopeful’ About Passing Background Checks

Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) told The Hill in an interview that he remains “very hopeful” about passing legislation to require background checks for gun sales where buyers can dodge them.

”Ours has been truly bipartisan,” he said of his legislation cosponsored by Sen. Pat Toomey (R-PA), which failed in the Senate one month ago. “It’s been a bipartisan approach between me and Pat Toomey and all the different people involved can keep it that way and hopefully we can look at the facts and the facts will win out the day.”

The legislation remains a longshot in Congress — even if it passes the Senate, and it is still five votes short of the 60 votes needed to overcome a filibuster. Proponents haven’t announced any new supporters since it was scuttled last month.
