President Barack Obama thought Phil Robertson would be a pretty swell guy to hang around with, before A&E networks suspended him for making anti-gay comments.

“The Duck Dynasty family seems like a pretty fun bunch, so I can see how that would be pretty fun,” he said in a forthcoming People Magazine interview, as quoted by Time.

People conducted the interview with Obama before Robertson’s inflammatory comments to GQ were published.

Obama diplomatically avoided answering People’s question about whether he’d spend a day in the company of the Robertsons or Kanye West, according to Time, although the President did say Kanye’s music was “outstanding.”

“I’ve got a lot of his stuff on my iPad,” he said. “If it was a concert, then I might not mind listening to him.”

Obama’s admiration for Kanye, however, hasn’t been mutual of late.
