President Barack Obama is champing at the bit to counter presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump on the campaign trail and endorse Democrat Hillary Clinton, The New York Times reported Monday.

Anonymous White House aides told the Times that Obama was “particularly enthusiastic” about the chance to go after Trump.

“He has indicated he wants to spend a lot of time on the campaign trail, so when it’s time to do that, we’ll go out guns ablazing,” Jennifer Psaki, Obama’s communications director, told the Times.

The paper reported that Obama’s endorsement of Clinton could come as early as this week, depending on how the former secretary of state performs in Tuesday’s primary contests. Aides told the publication that the White House already was having “active conversations” with Clinton’s campaign about how best to use Obama on the trail.

Jennifer Palmieri, Clinton’s communications director, told the newspaper that it was “hard to imagine a more convincing advocate for her.”
