Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has shot a gun before, his campaign wants you to know.

“Of course Sen. McConnell has shot a gun but as a matter of principle he’s not interested in helping the left bully people into revealing what protection they may keep in their own homes,” McConnell campaign spokeswoman Allison Moore told The Washington Examiner.

The statement follows a report in the Louisville Courier-Journal saying that McConnell had been conspicuously vague on whether he’s ever owned or shot a gun.

That column came after McConnell handed Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK) a gun on stage at the 2014 Conservative Political Action Conference. McConnell’s tea party primary opponent, Matt Bevin, and his likely general election challenger, Alison Lundergan Grimes, both criticized him on gun control after he gave the rifle to Coburn.
