Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee (R) on Monday night doubled down on his defense of the Duggar family following allegations that Josh Duggar sexually abused young girls.

After the publication of a police report revealing that the Duggars’ eldest son, Josh, was investigated for allegedly molesting five young girls, including four of his family members, Huckabee quickly defended Josh and the family in a statement on Facebook.

“Josh’s actions when he was an underage teen are as he described them himself, ‘inexcusable,’ but that doesn’t mean ‘unforgivable,'” Huckabee said. “No one needs to defend Josh’s actions as a teenager, but the fact that he confessed his sins to those he harmed, sought help, and has gone forward to live a responsible and circumspect life as an adult is testament to his family’s authenticity and humility.”

On Monday, Fox News’ Megyn Kelly asked Huckabee if he went too far by defending the family’s “authenticity and humility.”

“Absolutely not,” Huckabee responded. “In every family, we all deal with crises, we deal with issues.”

He then ridiculed authorities for releasing the police report.

“I was just stunned and shocked that, number one, the victims were exploited in this by the media for their own purposes. There was no interest in the media to protect those girls. There was no interest to make sure that their interests were served. I think your interview pointed out that they had a very different reaction to all of this than did their critics, who are out to destroy their family,” Huckabee said.

Following his initial defense of the Duggars, endorsements from Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar disappeared from the website for Huckabee’s presidential campaign.

Huckabee later mentioned Lena Dunham, who wrote in her book that she once looked at her sister’s vagina.

“It was not about the victims. It was about trying to go after the Duggars,” Huckabee said. “If a liberal has anything like this kind of situation, it’s no big deal. And I think we all have heard the comparison between this and Lena Dunham, who wrote about it in her book.”

Sarah Palin last week lashed out at Dunham while ridiculing the media coverage of allegations against Josh Duggar.
