On Wednesday, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, chair of the Democratic National Convention, said he believed marriage equality should be on the Democratic Party’s platform this year. Obama campaign manager Jim Messina said on a conference call with reporters that will be considered when the party puts together its platform later this year. “There will be a process for that and we will go through that process,” he said.
Messina pointed out, however, that Democrats’ record on gay rights stands in stark contrast to calls from the other side of the aisle for a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage and to reinstate the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy.
