Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ), chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, on Sunday said that although he wants the interim nuclear deal with Iran to work, the Senate must have strengthened sanctions ready in case the agreement fails.

“I want the deal to be successful,” he said on CBS’s “Face the Nation.” “But we have to be ready to move forward.”

He said that sanctions are necessary in order to ensure that Iran cannot build a nuclear weapon.

“Creating a sanctions regime that is an insurance policy … is incredibly important,” Menendez said.
