William Kyle Carpenter, a marine veteran who was severely injured in Afghanistan in 2010 will receive the Medal of Honor Award, sources told the Military Times.

He would become the third marine from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to obtain the award. Officials told the Military Times that the White House is finalizing plans for a ceremony.

As a 21-year-old lance corporal, Carpenter covered a grenade to save the life of his fellow Marine, Lance Cpl. Nicholas Eufrazio, in Afghanistan in 2010. Both were injured by the blast but survived, according to the Military Times.

Carpenter lost his right eye and most of his teeth. He also shattered his jaw and broke his arm.

If awarded the Medal of Honor, Carpenter would be come the first South Carolinian to receive the award since the Vietnam War, according to the Herald.
