Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV), one of the authors of the gun control bill that failed to pass Congress this year, said that he is still hopeful that gun reform can pass in 2014.

He said that when it came down to it, people supported the bill, but didn’t trust the government to implement it.

“The people who basically are law-abiding gun owners and understand gun culture, they weren’t offended at saying if you go to a commercial transaction, that makes sense to go ahead and find out is that person who wants to buy your gun a criminal.” Manchin said on CNN’s “State of the Union.” “We just don’t trust government stopping and doing what we say we’re going to do.”
