Breaking in a new section of his set on “The Nightly Show,” Larry Wilmore interviewed New York City mayor Bill de Blasio (D) on Monday night.

Wilmore focused on issues of income disparity and homelessness, which de Blasio attributed to the aftermath of America’s financial crash combined with relentless increases in living expenses.

Soon came a question about de Blasio’s “beef” with the New York Police Department, which appeared to intensify earlier this year after cops publicly turned their backs on the mayor following the murder of two NYPD officers.

“Is it like a West Coast, East Coast thing right now?” Wilmore asked.

De Blasio said that things have moved past the high-profile tension and that his administration’s goal is to bond police and community, later citing retraining of police and body cameras.

“It’s gonna take time, those images are very stark, them turning their back on you,” Wilmore said.

“When you’re trying to make social change, no one said it happens overnight,” the mayor said. “And I know the people want it.”
