Former Rep. J.C. Watts (R-OK) — one of the Republican Party’s most prominent African-American members — said Friday that the jury is still out on the GOP’s renewed effort to connect better with minority voters.
“The key is to put teeth in it and to be real about it,” Watts told the Washington Post while attending the North Carolina Republican Party convention in Charlotte, N.C.. “I’ll believe it when I see it.”
Last year, Watts publicly flirted with the idea of pursuing the chairmanship of the Republican National Committee before concluding that the party “probably isn’t ready for the kind of change” that he would seek.
