The soldier involved in Monday’s shooting incident at Fort Lee in Virginia has died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to the base commander.

The sergeant was taken to VCU Medical Center with a severe wound to the head and was declared dead Monday afternoon, according to The Richmond Times-Dispatch.

The sergeant barricaded herself inside a headquarters building on the base earlier on Monday and shot herself despite negotiation attempts made by officers who responded to the scene, the paper reported.

No one other than the shooter was injured in the incident, according to the paper.

Her name has not yet been released but the base commander said she was a sergeant first class who had been deployed to Iraq in 2007.
