Bill Daley, the former White House chief of staff under President Barack Obama, officially announced Tuesday that he’s launching an exploratory committee to gear up for a potential 2014 gubernatorial bid in Illinois, the Chicago Tribune reported.

The committee will enable Daley to raise money as he mulls a primary challenge to Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn, who’s been beset by anemic approval ratings. In a two-and-a-half minute campaign video on his website — BillDaleyIllinois.com —Daley officially unveiled his exploratory committee and criticized the state’s inability to act on issues such as same-sex marriage and gun control.

Daley stepped down as Obama’s chief of staff in early 2012.
