Eric Fehrnstrom, a senior adviser to Mitt Romney, defended the nominee’s convention speech against criticism, even on the right, for leaving out any mention of the war in Afghanistan and the troops fighting there in an interview on CNN’s “State of the Union” Sunday. As Fehrnstrom put it, Romney addressed that issue in a speech the night before.
“He spoke to Afghanistan in a big speech before the American Legion the night before his convention speech,” Fehrnstrom said.
Host Candy Crowley countered that that does not have nearly the kind of audience that a big convention speech does.
“Gov. Romney’s convention speech was an opportunity for him to introduce himself to millions of voters who are seeing him for the first time. And in that speech, he accomplished what he set out to do,” Fehrnstrom said in response. “We thought that speech was a home run.”
