The suspect in a mass shooting that left nine people dead Wednesday night at a historic black church in Charleston, South Carolina was arrested late Thursday morning, police Chief Greg Mullen said in a news conference.
21-year-old Dylann Storm Roof was arrested at about 11:15 a.m. ET during a traffic stop in Shelby, North Carolina, Mullen said.
“I’m so pleased that we were able to resolve this case quickly,” Mullen said. “Not only for the families, but for our community, for our state and so that nobody else is harmed by this individual who obviously committed a tragic, heinous crime last night in the city of Charleston.”
