Daniel King, defense attorney for James Holmes, arrives at the Arapahoe County Justice Center for a hearing on Thursday, May 29, 2014 in Centennial, Colo. The hearing will focus on how prospective jurors should be interviewed and what they should be asked in a written questionnaire. James Holmes pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to charges of killing 12 people and injuring 70 in the July 2012 attack. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty. Jury selection is scheduled to start in October, and the judge has said it could take up to three months. (AP Photo/The Denver Post, Andy Cross, Pool) MORE LESS

Robert Dear, the man charged with first-degree murder in Friday’s mass shooting at a Colorado Springs, Colorado Planned Parenthood clinic, is being defended in court by the same attorney who represented Aurora movie theater shooter James Holmes.

Dear was arraigned Monday on the murder charge and is being held without bail, according to the Associated Press. More charges were expected to come in a formal hearing on Dec. 9.

Dear’s public defender, Daniel King, is known for handling tough capital punishment cases. Holmes–who was eligible for the death penalty after killing 12 people and injuring 70–was sentenced to life in prison without parole in August. The sentencing was a surprise, especially for prosecutors who focused much of their case on the heinousness of the crime, according to a report from the Wall Street Journal.

  1. Oh, well. Even assholes are afforded proper defense in a court of law (at least the whiter and richer ones are … right?).

  2. Well, at least now we know what police and the authorities in deeply conservative CO Springs were doing while delaying releasing any information: desperately calling around to find this attorney for him while they coached him to “insane-ify” himself during interrogation.

  3. In a case like this, I prefer life without parole. Gives the scum a lifetime to witness how his act had zero influence on the constitutional right to choose.
