Democrats in Colorado on Tuesday announced proposals that would hold firearms manufacturers liable for damage inflicted with the guns they produce, the Denver Post reported. But as University of Denver law professor David Kopel told the paper, the lawmakers would first have to get around a federal law passed in 2005 that prevents gun manufacturers from being held responsible for crimes committed with their products.

Colorado Senate President John Morse (D) said some people believe the federal ban infringes upon states’ rights.
