Hillary Clinton reacted Tuesday to the fatal shooting of Terence Crutcher by police in Tulsa, Oklahoma, calling it “unbearable.”
In an appearance on “The Steve Harvey Morning Show,” Clinton said that she wanted to appeal “directly to white people” to work towards reducing “implicit bias” in policing.
“How many times do we have to see this in our country? In Tulsa, an unarmed man with his hands in the air?” she said. “I mean, this is just unbearable, and it needs to be intolerable.”
On Monday, Tulsa police released video of the fatal shooting of Crutcher, an unarmed black man, by a white officer. Police said that Crutcher refused to raise his hands, according to an AP report, although in the video the victim appears to put his hands on his vehicle.
“Terence did not have any weapon. Terence did not make any sudden movements,” said Damario Solomon-Simmons, an attorney for Crutcher’s family. “We saw that Terence was not being belligerent.”
The Department of Justice has opened a civil rights investigation into the shooting, according to the AP.
In the interview with Harvey, Clinton went on to praise the “good, honorable, cool-headed” police response to the Saturday night bombing in Manhattan.
“Maybe I can, by speaking directly to white people, say, look, this is not who we are,” she added. “We can do better. We have got to rein in what is absolutely inexplicable.”
