Hillary Clinton blasted Donald Trump for his press event Friday in which he finally acknowledged President Obama’s U.S. birth, but falsely claimed that the Clinton had started rumors and that he had put the end to them. Clinton called the remarks a “disgrace” on Twitter, while launching an extensive attack on Trump’s history of birtherism and his refusal to apologize to President for “asinine” smears.
Expressing zero regret for years of pushing a racist conspiracy theory, Trump again appointed himself judge & jury on @POTUS‘s citizenship.

When Trump tries to deflect blame for denying that @POTUS was born in America, he is lying. https://t.co/lje3lKrZQy pic.twitter.com/yq9IWnvXUc

This shouldn’t have to be said: You don’t just get to say someone else did the worst things you’ve done. It doesn’t work. No one buys it.

The birther lie is what turned Trump from an ordinary reality TV star into a political figure. That origin story can’t be unwritten.

What Trump should do: for once in his life, own up to his mistakes. Apologize to the President, and to the American people.

The Clinton campaign also issued a statement, calling Trump’s comments “disgraceful,” “appalling,” and “sickening.”
“Trump’s actions today were disgraceful,” Robby Mook, Clinton’s campaign manager, said in a statement. “After five years of pushing a racist conspiracy theory into the mainstream, it was appalling to watch Trump appoint himself the judge of whether the President of the United States is American. This sickening display shows more than ever why Donald Trump is totally unfit be president.”
