Clinton To Frame 2016 Election As ‘Moment Of Reckoning’ In DNC Speech

Hillary Clinton will frame the 2016 election as a “moment of reckoning” for the United States in her nomination acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention, according to excerpts released Thursday by her campaign.

“Powerful forces are threatening to pull us apart,” the prepared excerpts read. “Bonds of trust and respect are fraying. And just as with our founders there are no guarantees. It’s truly is up to us. We have to decide whether we’re going to work together so we can all rise together.”

Several other speakers, including President Barack Obama, also took that tack in Philadelphia this week, contrasting Clinton’s positive, detailed message with the ominous one laid out by Donald Trump and his supporters at the Republican National Convention.

Clinton is expected to say that on issues from national security to the economy, the choice between the GOP and Democratic Party was “stark.”

“Anyone reading the news can see the threats and turbulence we face,” the excerpts read. “From Baghdad and Kabul, to Nice and Paris and Brussels, to San Bernardino and Orlando, we’re dealing with determined enemies that must be defeated. No wonder people are anxious and looking for reassurance — looking for steady leadership.”

Clinton also will repeatedly wink at Trump, knocking his convention speech line that he “alone” could fix America’s problems.

“Every generation of Americans has come together to make our country freer, fairer, and stronger,” the excerpts read. “None of us can do it alone. That’s why we are stronger together.”

Ordinarily, I don’t like phrases like “moment of reckoning”. It seems too pompous, too narcissistic, a phrase that invites attention to oneself.

But it really does apply in this case. We have a choice of two paths: and one path clearly leads to perdition.
