Newark, N.J. Mayor Cory Booker was scheduled to travel to Iowa next month, and then he wasn’t — but throughout it all, organizers for the event were evidently left in the dark.
The mayor’s upcoming travels to the Hawkeye State became a source of confusion on Monday after The Daily Beast reported that the U.S. Senate aspirant was slated to travel there. But the report was swiftly corrected by Booker’s campaign manager, who told The Washington Post that the candidate won’t be traveling to Iowa, after all.
Booker was scheduled to deliver remarks on Aug. 29 at the University of Iowa, according to the school’s website. The university’s schedule had been cited in the now-corrected Beast report.
And according to The Des Moines Register, officials at the university were just as confused as the press.
“We were expecting him,” Lin Larson, director of University Creative Services at the University of Iowa, told the Register. “We had made the arrangements back in May or June.”
According to the Register, the university was notified on Monday that Booker will not be speaking there next month and that the Democrat’s campaign had asked his booking agency to cancel all planned events during a certain time frame.
Booker is the overwhelming favorite to win the special U.S. Senate election in New Jersey this year.
