Ben LaBolt, Obama’s spokesman for the 2012 campaign, says of Romney’s $10K bet that it could turn into “his grocery store scanner moment.” He’s referencing, of course, the famous gaffe of George H. W. Bush’s when he visited a grocery store on a photo-op during his reelection campaign and expressed amazement at the barcode scanning technology. This was widely touted as evidence of him being disconnected from the daily realities of most Americans.
