Apple on Thursday afternoon released a statement to Apple-focused blog The Loop confirming the company removed an app, “Find and Call,” with a Russian description, from its global App Store after security researchers earlier reported it was copying and sending users’ entire address books and contacts lists to the company that made the app, as well as spamming said contacts with links to download the app.
However, the app still appears to be living on some user devices. Although it was also found in and pulled from the Google Play store, the app appears to be the first instance of malware that has made it into the Apple App Store.
The news is another ding on Apple’s App Store in what’s shaping up to be a tough week for the service. It comes just days after developers began complaining that new updates they released for their apps would cause them to crash as soon as users opened them, apparently due to an Apple software issue.
