We’re in day 2 of our reporting on Matt Shea’s adventures in Ukraine and Poland: The far-right former state legislator from Washington traveled to the region, he says, because he wanted to take part in the evacuation of several dozen children — 62 or 63, accounts vary — from an orphanage in Mariupol, Ukraine, which has been under heavy Russian attack for days.

The “rescue action” itself happened earlier this month, and it’s not clear how involved Shea actually was: A right-wing Polish group that’s working with him wrote that the children “met their American rescuers after a 16-hour long train journey.”

Polish locals, realizing who Shea was, were concerned: The former state legislator has been formally accused of domestic terrorism for his involvement with the Malheur National Wildlife refuge standoff, and he’s known for his unique blend of fundamental Christianity, militarism, and support for the separatist 51st state movement known as “Liberty State.”

What’s Shea doing with 60-some Ukrainian kids in Poland? Here’s what we know so far:

  • Matt Shea, known for his document on killing non-believers in a hypothetical Biblical War, says he showed up in Europe a couple weeks ago to save several dozen Ukrainian orphans from the war.
  • But when Shea arrived in a small Polish town with more than 60 Ukrainian kids, locals understandably... had some questions, especially given his politics.
  • Shea didn't help his case when he gave contradictory information to local officials, according to their accounts.
  • The situation has received significant attention in Ukraine, and is reportedly on the radar of U.S. State Department officials and Polish authorities.

  1. I think that’s a god reference. He’s gonna bring the orphans home to white nationalist god.

  2. RW Republicans like Shea only care about kids when they are in the womb. Anyway, who in the hell can fly into a foreign country and try to leave with over sixty kids without taking a major amount of time to get approval? Isn’t that how those pizza parlor-basement child sex rings get started?

  3. Exactly. Home to the capital-F Father. He’s bringing them in for Jesus. Not for, you know, their physical well-being.

  4. Weird how these far-right freaks invariably turn out to be guilty of the shit they falsely accuse Democrats of doing?

The only way this could be more stomach churning (and ironic) is if it turns out this clown is actually running a child-sex trafficking ring out of the basement of pizza parlor in Liviv.

  5. I assume he’s gonna ship them home in Ikea furniture.
