President Obama and Mitt Romney kept with tradition and delivered quip-filled speeches at the Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation dinner in New York City Thursday night.
With the campaign ticking down, both candidates took good-natured jabs at each other in front of an audience of Catholic leaders, media personalities and wealthy benefactors.
The main focus for both candidates was on self-deprecation. Romney made several jokes about how he doesn’t drink thanks to his Mormon faith.
“People are curious how we prepare for the debates. Here is what I do,” Romney joked. “First, refrain from alcohol for 65 years. … Second find the biggest straw man and mercilessly attack him. Big Bird did not see it coming.”
Obama made many jokes about his lackluster performance on the debate stage in Denver.
“This is the third time Gov. Romney and I have met recently,” Obama joked. “As some of you have noticed, I had a lot more energy in our second debate. I felt really well rested after the nice long nap that I had during the first debate.”
