CHARLOTTE — Michelle Obama declared the Democratic National Convention here a great success, even before her husband takes the stage Thursday to deliver his speech to delegates and the nation.
Michelle Obama and Jill Biden addressed a raucous crowd Thursday morning at the Democratic Women’s Caucus a few blocks from Time Warner Arena, where both of their husbands will making big speeches later in the day.
In short remarks, Biden said the election is tremendously important for women.
“We can’t go back and fight the same battles we’ve fought,” she said. “From the choices we’ve made about health care to the pay we get at the workplace, the choice in this election couldn’t be clearer.”
Obama said the Democratic week in Charlotte has been just what the party and her husband’s campaign needs — and singled out President Clinton’s long speech Wednesday night as integral to that success.
“I think that President Clinton did a phenomenal job,” she said, to cheers from the gathered women.
With ratings and internet traffic besting the numbers from the Republican convention in Tampa last week, Obama reflected Democrats’ mood heading into the convention’s final night.
“I don’t know about all of you, but I think we have had a pretty amazing week here in Charlotte,” Obama said. “And from the energy and enthusiasm we’re seeing, not just in the caucuses but in the streets — it’s just palpable. It’s so clear that people are fired up.”
