The last month has seen all sort of rumblings about Mitt Romney’s Mormon faith.
However, for all the huffing and puffing, it turns out it might not matter. Just 42 percent of Americans can correctly name Romney as a Mormon, according to a survey by the Public Religion Research Institute.
Although conservative evangelicals have grown more knowledgeable about Romney’s religion — up from 44 percent in July to 53 percent today — most voters are unaware about the candidate’s faith.
Earlier this month, conservative pastor Robert Jeffress accused Mormonism of being a cult. Jeffress had introduced Rick Perry at the Values Voter Summit in Washington. And while Perry sought to distance himself from Jeffress’s comments, secret emails leaked to the press suggest that Perry’s associates have been actively looking to discredit Mormonism for political purposes.
But for all the campaign hysteria over religion, voters seem to think it amounts to little more than a sideshow.
