Jon Stewart Examines The Very Short Lifespan Of A Political Gaffe

Jon Stewart

Jon Stewart on Monday examined the political lifespan of the “candidate gaffe.” In the old days, a gaffe could survive for months or even years. But today’s “exploding gaffe population forces each individual gaffe to fight desperately for dwindling resources,” Stewart said.

Just days ago, President Obama stepped up to the White House Briefing Room podium and declared that the private sector is “doing fine.”

“Congratulations, Mr. President, it’s a gaffe,” Stewart said. A couple of hours later, that gaffe developed into a fully grown talking point. And eventually the gaffe had to be walked back. In President Obama’s case, that happened four hours after his initial press conference.

Which leaves the final stage of the gaffe cycle, when our nation’s “esteemed gaffe-stronomists” will pick over the gaffe on Sunday morning talk shows.
