Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour (R) is coming to Rick Perry’s rescue.
Hours after New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) publicly endorsed Mitt Romney and called on Rick Perry to repudiate the anti-Mormon words of Dr. Robert Jeffress, Barbour took to CNN to deliver a message to Christie: Cool your jets, bro.
“You know, crazy as I am about Chris Christie and as good friends as he and I are, I disagree with the idea that just because somebody who is for you at some other time says something that is disagreeable, that you have to go out and flog him behind the barn,” Barbour said. “The fact of the mat of is, perry said he didn’t agree with that. That ought to be the end of it.”
Rick Perry has said he doesn’t think Mormonism is a cult like Jeffress does, but he has declined to say that Jeffress shouldn’t say that about a religion with millions of members across the globe.
Barbour’s tried to come to the aid of southern governors who’ve gotten a little too close to unsavory parts of their base before. Results have been mixed at best.
