Saving Private Rubes

As you may have heard, South Carolina’s very popular incumbent Governor Nikki Haley has decided to endorse Marco Rubio, coming off his 3rd place Iowa finish and 5th place New Hampshire result. She has made pretty clear that her main investment is in opposition to Donald Trump. And her endorsement of Rubio is pretty devastating for Jeb Bush, whose numbers seem to be flagging in the state even after a pretty solid debate performance and new haircut.

Is Trump Really Crumbling?

As you’ve seen NBC has a new poll out tonight showing Ted Cruz pulling into a nationwide lead in the GOP primary race. Of course, there is no national primary. But Trump hasn’t been behind nationwide in basically forever. So is this legit?

Award For Most Opaque Statement On Scalia Successor Goes To …

Sen. Dean Heller (R-NV):

The chances of approving a new nominee are slim, but Nevadans should have a voice in the process. That’s why I encourage the President to use this opportunity to put the will of the people ahead of advancing a liberal agenda on the nation’s highest court. But should he decide to nominate someone to the Supreme Court, who knows, maybe it’ll be a Nevadan.

What does that even mean?

From the Field …

From TPM Reader ML

Long long time reader, don’t email much. But you like to know what’s going on, “on the ground”

I happen to be in Colorado /aspen this week. I have to say, it seems like there have been a flood of sanders ads on tv/cable. Not much in the way of Clinton ads.

Coincidently, there was a story in the aspen times the other day that Clinton was doing well in terms of contributions from aspen donors.

I saw that Nate silver suggested sanders needs to target Colorado on SuperTuesday, and it looks to me like the sanders campaign recognizes that.

Just a view from the field

Another Report

From TPM Reader WA

To Echo what ML wrote, longtime reader going back to the Gore Debacle. My thoughts on the Bernie phenomenon:

I’m at the airport in Oakland, CA waiting to go home to Denver, and just watched a group of middle aged ladies, white, Latino, and Asian all sporting Sanders gear hooting and hollering about to get on a flight to Las Vegas and being excited about going to Nevada to help the Sanders campaign.

Feeling the Semi-Bern

TPM Reader MJ has a question …

I’ve been dying for your opinion on a few issues.

Just to echo what readers WA and ML said earlier, I’m a longtime reader of eight years who has vacillated between Bernie and Clinton. In 2008 I switched early on to Obama, when it became apparent that he combined hopeful idealism with a kind of pragmatism. I don’t really see Bernie in the same way—he and his supporters don’t appear to have the pragmatic streak that was part of what made Obama appealing to many people in 2008.

Book’em

A federal grand jury has indicted Cliven Bundy and four others on 16 charges related to the armed standoff near Bundy’s Nevada ranch in 2014. The charges range from assault to conspiracy to various weapons charges but are all tied to what the charging documents refer to as the “massive armed assault” Bundy lead using 200 followers to prevents federal law agents from rounding up 400 of Bundy’s cattle.

DeBerned in Vermont?

I was in Vermont this weekend and busted my knee. So I’m a bit down on Vermont. But TPM Reader SS wanted to share his thoughts on Sanders. So I’m giving Vermont a break.

Vermonter here who has voted repeatedly for Bernie for statewide office but who will vote for Hillary on March 1.

You gave Reader MJ’s remark the headline “Feeling the Semi-Bern.” MJ asks for your thoughts on it all, which you haven’t yet provided. But let me remind you and everyone else out there: Sanders is not a member of the Democratic Party. Never has been and probably never will be.

Trump: Look, He’s a Low-Energy Pope

No, Trump didn’t say that. But the Pope did just say that someone who wants to build walls like Trump does is “not a Christian.” And Trump lashed out at the Pope calling his comments “disgraceful.” So basically Trump is now in a shouting match with the Pope. And the Pope has big buildings!
