Sobering

A pretty bracing view of Mexico’s take on the US drug war and the savage toll it’s taken on Mexico. Former Mexican President Vincente Fox showed up In Seattle today for a new conference to announce the launch of the first national marijuana brand. He’s not involved in the business but urged reporters to “maintain a focus on the important issues at hand: the failure of the drug war, the thousands of lives lost, and the better alternative offered by legalization.”

What’s Happening In Turkey?

As some longtime readers know, I’m a turkophile. So I’ve been extremely eager to get a grip on just what’s going on there over the last 48 hours (quick version: massive street protests in Istanbul, perhaps spreading to other parts of the country). Unlike some other issues, this is a topic I know just enough about to know just how much I don’t know. So I’m very cautious.

I spoke to a friend of mine with deep experience in the country who told me that her real question was whether the protests could maintain their momentum into a second day. And just checking in now after a day mainly out of touch with the news it seems like they very much have. I’ve seen multiple news reports of arrests numbering roughly 1000 with protests now spreading well-beyond Istanbul.

For those who are new to this topic, let me try to give a very general explanation of the context of what’s happening here. Again, very general, if you’re familiar with Turkish history I’ll cover a lot of really basic and obvious ground. Read More

WTF is Up With Ricin?

You remember last month’s Ricin drama with the Elvis impersonator arrestee who improbably claimed he’d been set up by a rival local performer and then that turned out to be true. Well, now we have this new case of letters to Bloomberg and Obama with much more threatening text in the letters about guns. As we reported on Friday, federal authorities have now zeroed in on a guy named Nathan Richardson down in Texas who authorities first got tipped to by his wife who says she saw “strange material” in the couple’s fridge and ricin-related searches on their home computer.

Well, now Richardson is claiming that he’s being framed by his wife. Here’s the latest.

‘Closed-Minded, Racist, Rigid, Old-Fashioned’

A new report out from the national ‘College Republicans’ has blistering news about the party’s standing among young voters. From the report: “In the focus group research conducted in January 2013, the young ‘winnable’ Obama voters were asked to say what words came to mind when they heard ‘Republican Party.’ The responses were brutal: closed-minded, racist, rigid, old-fashioned.”

And those are the ‘winnable’ ones.

The End Of An Era

Most of the obituaries of Frank Lautenberg duly mention that he was the last World War II veteran serving in the Senate. It might be tempting to take that data point merely as proof that Lautenberg was really old (he was 89). But it marks the end of nearly 70 years in which a WWII vet has held a Senate seat.

Here’s a photo of Lautenberg during World War II, where he served in the Army Signal Corps from 1942-46 (no exact date is given for the photo): Read More
