The Navy is confirming a shooting at the Navy Yard in DC. Latest reports are that it is an ongoing shooting. You can track developments at TPMLiveWire.
For those not familiar with DC, Washington Navy Yard is in southeast Washington, roughly a mile from the Capitol building. Navy Yard is near the relatively new Nationals Park, which is the centerpiece of the redevelopment in that area: lots of new office and apartment high rises. It is the oldest military installation in U.S. and remains an active Navy facility. It’s relatively open to the public, with the National Museum of the U.S. Navy and a decommissioned destroyer-turned-museum both housed there.
Here’s a quick update on the still-unfolding mass shooting at the DC Navy Yard which began at around 8:30 this morning. Police say that at least 10 people were shot by the assailant. We’ve heard higher numbers but that seems to be the only clearly sourced number. Meanwhile, there have been numerous reports about numbers of dead. But the only report that seems solid is the Navy’s statement about “reports of fatalities” – presumably multiple deaths, but precise number unclear. [Late Update: The LAT is now quoting a Navy spokesman who says the Navy believes there are at least four dead in today’s shooting.]
Finally all reports suggest the suspect – about whom very little is known – is barricaded or trapped somewhere inside the facility. See more live feed coverage here.

Washington Navy Yard is one of the off-the-beaten-path places I send family and friends who are visiting DC. The National Museum of the Navy there is not as grand as the Smithsonian fixtures, but it has some interesting exhibits and naval artifacts, it’s rarely crowded, and parking is easy.
And it’s just a cool place. Read More
