So it turns out the jury reached a verdict but not the verdict in the John Edwards trial. Unanimity on only one count — no unanimity on the remaining 5 counts. It was not revealed how the jury came down on the one count, but it is reportedly the count having to do with whether Bunny Mellon’s payments for the keeping and hiding of Edwards’ mistress exceeded the FEC contribution limits. The judge, as is customary, sent the jury back to continue deliberating.

The government’s case against John Edwards was always a reach. The partial verdict announced just now confirms it. Edwards was found not guilty on one count, and a mistrial was declared on the five others. It remains to be seen whether the Justice Department will move to try the case again.
When word first came down this afternoon that the John Edwards jury had reached a verdict, the cable nets were calm, deliberate, and OMG! When it turned out to be only a partial verdict at that point … AAAAARGH!
