Powerless

Mitt Romney seemed to indicate Monday to CBS News that presidents are essentially powerless when it comes to abortion policy. Abortion rights advocates beg to differ.

An Odd One

Four Army soliders were brought up on state charges in the killing of a young couple last year in Georgia. One of the victims was a fellow solider. They and he were allegedly members of a loose-knit militia group. Yesterday, as one of the defendants changed his plea and prepared to become a state’s witness against the others, prosecutors divulged that among the group’s activities was a plot to assassinate President Obama. How far along that plot got and how serious it was remains one of the unknowns of the case. Perhaps the lack of any federal charges so far suggests it was more aspirational than operational. Nick Martin has more on what is known.

Hard To Figure

Scratching my head on this one: a majority of voters are actually interested in learning more about the Republican Party platform during this week’s convention. That’s more than care about Mitt Romney’s acceptance speech. As for that platform, there’s a lot there Team Romney might prefer voters didn’t pay too much attention to.

Possible Silver Lining

Tropical Storm Isaac hasn’t gone through the explosive strengthening that sometimes happens when cyclones tap the warms waters of the Gulf of Mexico. It’s still forecast to grow into a hurricane (perhaps as soon as the next National Hurricane Center advisory) before it makes landfall tonight along the Louisiana coast, with a substantial storm surge, high winds and torrential rains. But if the immediate coastal area avoids the extreme effects of a more powerful storm — and if New Orleans’ new levees and, more importantly, it’s new pumping systems, hold up — Isaac’s copious tropical moisture may actually be a good thing on balance, bringing some long-awaited relief to the drought stricken areas of the southeast and mid-Mississippi Valley.

Here’s the most recent national drought map: Read More
