I have seen and heard numerous discussions of how Sandy might affect the election results if some people have trouble getting to the polls to vote. What I haven’t seen is any discussion of what happens if there are no polls to go to or there are only electronic voting machines and no power?
The reports coming in from across New York City this evening, especially in lower Manhattan and low-lying areas of Brooklyn, suggest a worst-case scenario is ongoing: record storm surge from Hurricane Sandy overtopping and breaching the city’s flood protections, swamping the city’s subway tunnels, sending flood waters through city streets, and knocking out power to large swaths of the city.
