With the experience of Justice Sotomayor’s confirmation process and the pre-process now underway for Susan Rice, it’s difficult not to conclude that congressional Republicans face particular obstacles being rational and not-awful when faced with female nominees for high office who are not white. This may sound like conclusions based on little data. But Sotomayor v. Kagan? Pretty little difference on the merits; big difference on the nature of the opposition. One shopper was cutting in line at the Sears when he got in a dispute with several other shoppers and punched one man in the face. The man he punched pulled a gun on him — though reports vary on whether he pointed the gun at his assailant or at the ground. One witness said the crowd scattered when the gun was pulled and that the assailant hid behind a refrigerator before fleeing the store.

Hiding behind the steeply discounted fridge takes it to the level of minor masterpiece.
