Key supporter says that making the M1911 .45-caliber handgun the official state gun of Utah will help counter the bad publicity created by recent mass murders. Watch.
Rep. Gary Ackerman (D-NY), a big supporter of Israel and AIPAC, says the US should tell Mubarak to step down and suspend aid to Egypt until he does.
As a point of personal privilege, before any more time goes by, I wanted to note that a week ago (Jan. 24th, 2011) was the 50th anniversary of Bob Dylan’s arrival in New York City. According to his memoir, he came across country from Minneapolis in a ’57 Impala (hitch-hiking, I think, though I’m not quite clear on that), across the George Washington Bridge and then immediately down to the Cafe Wha? in Greenwich village.
I was going to toss in, for what it’s worth, that that was four days after John Kennedy was sworn in as president. But when I thought about it, it seemed too complicated to figure out what it was worth, so I won’t.
For those not acquainted with the mythography, Dylan (then Bobby Zimmerman) was raised in Hibbing, Minnesota, in the so-called Iron Range, specifically the Mesabi Iron Range. Went to Minneapolis for college but didn’t go to classes and dropped out. And not too long after that to New York. As he put it in Chronicles: Volume One: “I was there to find singers, the ones I’d heard on record — Dave Van Ronk, Peggy Seeger, Ed McCurdy, Brownie McGhee and Sonny Terry, Josh White, The New Lost City Ramblers, Reverend Gary Davis and a bunch of others — most of all to find Woody Guthrie. New York City, the city that would come to shape my destiny. Modern Gomorrah. I was at the initiation point of square one but in no sense a neophyte.”
Heritage Foundation asks Rep. Issa (R-CA), Chairman of the House Oversight Committee, to get crackin’ on rolling back decades of worker, consumer and environmental protection laws.
If it weren’t so funny it’d be painful to watch Mitt Romney try to recast himself as a tea partier before tea partying was cool. Mitt’s got a new paperback edition of his book — No Apology — coming out in which he tries to distance RomneyCare from ObamaCare. He also throws in lines that Sarah Palin might have written, claiming that Obama exploited the financial crisis “to promote his extreme liberal agenda” and that Democrats “simply do not believe in America as it was shaped by the Founders.”
The US sends roughly $2 billion a year in aid to Egypt, part of a package that grew out of the 1979 Camp David Accords and the Israel-Egypt peace treaty. Just where does that $2 billion go? Here’s a primer.
You have to know the euphemisms and lingo of the Israel-Palestine issue to get what he’s saying. But Mike Huckabee seems to be saying that solution to the conflict is for the Palestinians to leave what’s now called the “West Bank” and have “the Arabs” find them a piece of land from the “vast amounts of territory that are in the hands of Muslims, in the hands of Arabs.”
In other words, expulsion or what’s sometimes euphemistically called “transfer”.
Pro-life group admits trying to pull an ACORN-type sting on Planned Parenthood and failing miserably. If nothing else, left-leaning social service groups are probably hip to pimp walk-ins at this point. But hope springs eternal.
