Perry’s Alternative Maximum Tax

Yesterday Rick Perry introduced his campaign-saving ‘flat tax’ proposal, which turns out to be flat only for really wealthy people.

There’s a history of so-called ‘alternative minimum taxes’, basically tools in the tax code to prevent very wealthy people from finding ways of paying little or no tax. But the Perry plan appears to function as an ‘alternative maximum tax’, a tool in the tax code to prevent high-income earners from paying any more in taxes than the middle class.
