Heatin’ Up Down In Florida

Former state GOP Chairman Jim Greer has been arrested.

No charges have been announced yet. The arrest was by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, which is holding a press conference at 11:30 ET.

Greer, you’ll recall, was a longtime pal and ally of Republican Gov. Charlie Crist, but was forced out as chairman earlier this year as Crist’s Senate campaign was lagging and Greer faced accusations of financial improprieties involving party money. You can check out all our coverage of the Greer case at TPMmuckraker.

Palin: Told You So About Drilling!

Sarah Palin says Deepwater Horizon catastrophe proves she was right about ‘Drill, Baby, Drill’ since she only meant drilling on land — even though she also meant drilling at sea.

Fessin’ Up

The Senate campaign of Rep. Mark Kirk (R-IL) is acknowledging an earlier Richard Blumenthal-eque embellishment by Kirk of his military record. As we noted yesterday, Kirk’s House website at one point touted him as having served “in” Operation Iraqi Freedom, when in fact he served during that time, but not in Iraq. The campaign tells Greg Sargent, “Unfortunately, the official Web site listed the word “in” instead of “during” but was corrected in 2005.”

Livin’ High On The GOP Hog

Authorities in Florida have revealed the charges against former GOP chairman Jim Greer: six felony counts of fraud, theft, and money laundering. The charges stem from a company Greer and the state party’s executive director, Delmar Johnson, set up to do fundraising for the party — but that ended up allegedly keeping for itself about 10 percent of the political contributions made to the state party, which added up to a couple hundred thousand dollars in the pockets of Greer and Johnson, the party claims.

Fun Reading

Oh, man. The scheme former Florida GOP chairman Jim Greer has been charged with is so blatant and so simple that if you’ve ever been in and around state party politics you ought to just read the affidavit by the lead investigator yourself (starting on page 4).

Haggard Announces Half-Gay Church

We noted yesterday that non-gay former televangelist Ted Haggard said he had a “big announcement” coming today. And now we know what it is. Haggard is starting a new church that will welcome gays but not accept gay marriages. It’s a little unclear to me from the announcement whether Haggard is actually turning over a new leaf and just can’t quite get his head around gay marriage or whether this is just another angle on offering kinder gentler ‘cures’ for homosexuality.

Maybe it’s a gay version of the “half-way covenant” the New Englanders came up with back in the middle of the 17th century for people who were semi-saved.

Breaking New Ground in War Fibs

Part of the comic relief of the 2010 election is turning out to be politician war fibs. And what’s more entertaining isn’t so much the shamelessness but the variety and creativity. Now we have embattled and adored Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer who told the Arizona Republic that her dad “died fighting the Nazi regime in Germany.”

Only he died in California in 1955.
