Florida Follies

It’s not just Dems looking for silver linings at this point. Establishment GOPers getting whipsawed by Tea Partiers and uber-wingers is threatening to become a serious theme of the 2010 election. Rick Scott, the heavy baggage former health care exec is mounting a campaign from the right against the guy who was supposed to be the anointed GOP standard-bearer in the Florida governor’s race, former Rep. Bill McCollum. But now Quinnipiac has a poll out showing Scott’s money has pushed into a double digit lead against McCollum.

Obama Blago 2008

From the trial yesterday we learned that if things hadn’t gone so poorly, Blago and his top aides were planning on having him be the golden boy from Illinois who ran for president in 2008.

Check It Out

We obtained a copy of Alvin Greene’s hand-printed check to the South Carolina Democratic Party to pay his filing fee to run for U.S. Senate.

Recall the state Democrats rejected his first check because it was on a personal account, not a campaign account. So it looks like he ran out and opened an account and got those generic checks you get when you open a new account.

Bailout to End All Bailouts?

Genius.

Minority Leader Boehner says taxpayers should help BP foot the bill for cleaning up the Gulf.

I think the problem here for BP is that at least with the banks there was a good argument that the collapse of one or more major banks would cause a systemic and catastrophic shock to the real economy. Not seeing that with BP getting in money trouble.

Conspiracy?

In an interview with TPM, Majority Whip James Clyburn (D-SC) alleges that Alvin Greene is not alone and that a total of three candidates, all African American, were planted in three separate federal elections in South Carolina: Greene in the Senate and two in U.S. House races. Like Greene, one of the other candidates Clyburn fingers also won the Democratic nomination. Christina Bellantoni reports.

Run It By Tom! (Special Numbnut Edition)

As I mentioned below, Rep. Boehner’s office is trying to walk back his suggestion that taxpayers should help foot the bill for the Gulf clean up. His spokesman says he misunderstood the question and believes “BP is responsible for the cost of the cleanup.”

But this started with comments from Tom Donohue, head of the US Chamber of Commerce who said he doesn’t think the government should force BP, a member of the Chamber, to foot the whole bill. Boehner was asked whether he agreed and said he did. When our reporter pressed Boehner’s spokesman on whether he was saying he disagreed with Donohue’s position, he wouldn’t bite, but just stuck with his statement.

Now the spokesman is calling Beutler a “numbnut” and claiming he mumbled. So Boehner couldn’t hear him.
