Here’s one eye-popper likely to come out of tonight’s run-off in South Carolina. Strom Thurmond’s son Paul (yes, Strom was siring children well into geezerdom) is probably going to get beat in the race for the GOP nomination in South Carolina’s 1st congressional district by a right-wing, Tea Partying, Palin-backed African-American candidate named Tim Scott.
Did the Eyjafjallajokull Volcano end up (maybe) costing Gen. McChrystal his job?
Ret. Adm. Joe Sestak, now running for senate in Pennsylvania, tells local Fox affiliate: no rush to judgment on McChrystal.
It’s being reported that Gen. McChrystal has submitted his resignation to President Obama and Secretary Gates. And that’s being played in some publications as meaning McChrystal’s out.
Not even close. It’s entirely possible that McChrystal will be out this afternoon. But in the present circumstances McChrystal submitting his resignation is a given; it is absolutely essential for him to do. He has no choice. And it goes without saying.
The question is whether Obama and Gates choose to accept. His submitting his resignation simply isn’t the bombshell some are presenting it as.
(It’s definitely a scoop for the folks reporting it correctly.)
Wait till you hear that the resignation has been accepted.
Late Update: Like I told you, now there’s further clarification. McChrystal has “offered to resign.” To be perfectly clear: great scoop from Joe Klein. Wish we would have gotten it. But the offer to resign, even submitting your resignation isn’t the same as having it accepted. And in this case, it almost goes without saying. Don’t be misled.

Widow of late wrestler Owen Hart sues WWE, now-senate candidate Linda McMahon and her husband Vince. The claim is that the WWE used images of Hart in videos and promotions without his wife’s approval.
But the underlying story is going to be what gets attention. Hart was killed in 1999 during a introduction stunt in which he was supposed to be lowered into the ring suspended on cables. Something malfunctioned and he fell 78 feet to his death.
8:27 PM: And there you have it. The AP calls it for Nikki Haley.
8:23 PM: One of the most interesting patterns in the SC-GOV Republican primary has been the fact that national Republicans — especially the would-be presidential contenders — have almost all lined up behind Nikki Haley. Even Gov. Pawlenty rather feebly got behind her just this afternoon. But in state, it’s really true that the great bulk of the Republican establishment has been against her. Not just supporting someone else, but seemingly against her.
8:16 PM: Only 26% of voters reporting. But I think Rep. Bob Inglis (R-SC) is probably going to have find a new line of work. Even with a quarter of the vote in, a 72% – 28% is a steep climb.
8:04 PM: Getting our first results in from South Carolina. Nikki Haley way out in front so far, but only just over 10% in.
