What About the NY Dems?

Where do the Democrats stand on the so-called Ground Zero Mosque that isn’t a mosque and isn’t at Ground Zero?

Right Unleashes Boffo Kevin Bacon McCarthyism

This is more comic than anything else. But someone just forwarded me an article by the Muslim-bashing blowhard and far-right crank Aaron Klein (truly a shonda for the Jews) who has a new piece up in World Net Daily milking the ‘Journolist’ story into Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon-like levels of parody.

Now we learn that John Judis (who happens to a be friend of mine, almost a mentor, if he’d be willing to think of me that way) was on Journolist. And though long associated with the radical “New Republic,” about thirty years ago he wrote for In These Times. And William Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn are currently on the board of In These Times. And they were part of the Weather Underground that blew stuff up in the early 1970s. So it’s a pretty slam dunk case that Journolist was basically a terrorist planning listserve or a cabal developing strategies for hacking Breitbart.com.

Also, members of Journolist were tied to groups supporting Net Neutrality. Others were tied to the centrist apparently hard-left radical New America Foundation, the DC think tank which gets most of its funding from major corporations (not that there’s anything wrong with that) and has Google CEO Eric Schmidt as its Chairman of the Board.

Next thing New America will be trying to build near and desecrate Ground Zero.

From the Budget Commission

From Brian Beutler’s report on what appears to be happening within the Deficit Commission which will report back after the election …

Though most of the commission’s work occurs behind closed doors in small working groups, early reports indicate that the GOP’s unwillingness to support any significant tax increases are pushing the group toward proposed entitlement slashes and larger budget cuts.

Ask Not What TPM Can Do For You …

Can I ask you a favor?

Almost 24,000 of our regular readers follow TPM on Facebook. And we’d love to get that number to 30,000. Can you help us? If you haven’t already ‘followed’ TPM or ‘liked’ us on Facebook, it’s super easy. If you’re on Facebook and you’re not already a “fan” there will be a little ‘like’ button on that Facebook box at the bottom of this post. Just click it. And that’s it. Easy as that.

We really appreciate it. Thank you.

Not As Simple as It Seems

This is a fascinating story.

We noted recently that Minnesota-based Target had availed itself of the new freedom created by the Citizen’s United decision to give $150,000 to support far-right Minnesota gubernatorial candidate Tom Emmer. And in so doing they reaped a big backlash. Target’s aim seems to have been to support Emmer’s economic policies. But the backlash came over Emmer’s extremely anti-gay policy stands. (He’s also really against waiters.)

Target’s CEO has now taken the pretty extraordinary step of issuing a public apology for the donation.

Target, as it happens, has a quite good corporate record on LGBT issues and workplace policies. So it’s a fascinating example of how cross-cutting and complicated Citizen’s United giving may turn out to be.
