Violating political and constitutional norms is not only the province of Donald Trump. What is happening on the Senate side, with GOP senators making campaign promises to block ANY Hillary Clinton nominee to the Supreme Court – permanently – defies any conventional understanding of the advice and consent role.

We covered this extensively yesterday, but I’m still not sure it’s breaking through in the national political conversation.

Sen. Richard Burr (R-NC), locked in a very tight race for re-election, was caught on tape obtained by CNN saying out loud that if Clinton is elected he’s shooting for her to still have a unfilled Supreme Court vacancy in four years.

“If Hillary Clinton becomes president, I am going to do everything I can do to make sure four years from now, we still got an opening on the Supreme Court,”

With all of the Trump turbulence roiling the election, it’s easy to overlook what is going on here. Add it to plentiful evidence that Trump is not an aberration but an organic result of the modern GOP’s willingness to tear it all down.
