We noted Tommy Thompson yesterday saying he’d be doing better in his Senate race if he didn’t have to run with Mitt Romney.
Now Herman Cain is saying he’d be way ahead of Obama at this point if he were the nominee because he has “some depth to my ideas.”
Cain told members of the media after the speech that Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney’s recent “47 percent” comment was a “non-story” being blown out of proportion by the media. But Cain said he would have been doing better if he was the nominee, saying that he’d probably have a “substantial lead” on President Barack Obama at this point.
“The reason is quite simple: I have some depth to my ideas,” he said.
Needless to say, the factual claim here is preposterous, as are most things Cain says. But the drip drip drip of casual disrespect for Romney from supposed supporters and the assumption that he’s a bad candidate who’s destined for defeat is no joke. It sows bad morale, becomes an intra-party distraction and source of conflict and confirms the settling idea that Romney’s a loser. All of which make it much harder for Romney to turn things around.
